FAQ's
What is the Erbium YAG laser?
The Erbium laser is one of the latest tools available for the treatment of wrinkles, acne scars, aged, and sun-damaged skin. The Erbium laser is a cool light laser which resurfaces the skin. The results of this method are less post-procedure redness, less swelling, and a greater turnaround in healing time than with other laser skin resurfacing methods. All of this culminates in the Erbium laser being a more accurate and less painful method of restoring one’s skin to its more youthful appearance. Another positive benefit to using the Erbium laser is that it can be used on the neck, chest, and hand regions. It is also worth noting that many doctors are discovering the benefits of the Erbium laser for acne scar treatments.
What are the results of laser resurfacing?
The micro-injuries created by the laser stimulate new collagen and elastin production for skin remodeling, ultimately smoothing and evening out skin texture and tone, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars as well as other skin imperfections. Because this laser creates micro channels in the skin, the laser can be used to deliver topical products like growth factor serum or platelet rich plasma (PRP) more deeply into the skin for enhanced rejuvenation.
What does the procedure entail?
- Erbium laser skin resurfacing is a procedure designed to remove superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face. The Erbium laser results in a narrower area of heating of adjacent tissues than with other laser skin resurfacing methods. This results in a more focused removal of old skin cell layers. The Erbium laser’s ability to stimulate the production of collagen is key to creating a tightening and smoothing of the skin. The change in the collagen results in the removal of fine wrinkles and the diminished visibility of more prominent wrinkles.
- In the Erbium Laser Resurfacing procedure, a small area of the skin’s surface is heated with the Erbium laser which in turn vaporizes superficially damaged skin cells and results in the thickening of the skin’s collagen.
- The length of the Erbium laser procedure varies from 15 minutes to slightly more than an hour depending on the individual’s needs.
- To minimize discomfort and anxiety we utilize topical anesthetic as well as our ProNox device. As this procedure is performed in an outpatient environment, patients can return home the same day.
- Healing is more rapid because the Erbium laser results in decreased redness, swelling, and bruising associated with laser resurfacing.
What is the difference between full and fractionated laser resurfacing?
- While the full ablative Erbium laser emits the full laser beam onto the skin the fractionated ablative laser breaks up its laser beam into a grid of tiny beams that create microscopic injuries to the top layer of skin. Because only a “fraction” of the skin is treated at one time with the fractionated laser, healing is more rapid, and downtime is less.
- In most procedures, patients treated with the full laser are able to fully recuperate within 7-14 days, and those with the fractionated laser in 3-7 days.
Who is a good candidate for laser resurfacing?
Patients in good health who desire skin rejuvenation with a shorter recovery period. It works best for patients with superficial and moderately deep lines and wrinkles who have sun damage, brown spots and/or acne scars.
How long is recovery from fractioned laser resurfacing
In most cases, patients are fully recovered and back to normal activities within 7-14 days after the full Erbium and 3-7days after the fractionated Erbium depending on the area treated and the energy used. Studies show consistent improvement of lines, wrinkles, photodamage and scars for up to 6 months after treatment.
Initially, there will be some swelling. Within less than a week you will see new pink skin that is softer and younger looking. You will receive specific post-treatment instructions that are important for your best outcome during the consultation and the day of treatment. Post-treatment, it is important to wear sunscreen because your skin may be more sun sensitive as it is healing.
